"The Gathering"

This is a real painting finally (unlike my journal pages) on board with acrylics. I painted the back painting using some of my favorite colors and let it dry. Then I began to look at the board to decide what kind of drawing I wanted to start with- I had NO pre-conceived ideas.

NOW THIS IS THE FREAKIE WEIRD PART!

These little creatures just began to appear!! I am not lying- and I wasn't smokin' anything or drinkin.

I just took a pencil and began drawing around what I saw as quickly as I could before they disappeared. The first one was the little woman/ground squirrel in purple thing. She just made me smile and then there was the next and the next. They were all just standing there looking at one another like they were having an animal meeting over a serious subject. The fence was sort of there, but I went ahead and filled it all the way in to give the painting some continuity.

It was so much fun and SO EASSSSY to draw them, then to just paint them and darken the backgrounds so that they would stand out.

I'm sure this has happened to someone else besides me- but you need to share it with me - because I'm a little freaked out. I mean, I've been practicing making watercolors and "finding" fun little animals since I got the new book from Carla Sonheim but this was different. Mystical- Magical. These little creature/peoples just said, "I'm waiting- draw me out" like a Beatrix Potter moment.
I've tried it again but it didn't happen. So, I want to know from those that it has happened to if I can expect it back -whatever IT was.... BECAUSE IT WAS A BLAST!

VERY COOL!!! Its really good that you went with what you saw. I see things sometimes in my backgrounds but usually don't do anything with them, sometimes I try to sketch what I see and then I feel silly and don't do it. Only one time has it ever came out for me. I think its on my blog somewhere, its a girl with a party hat and then this dog appeared out of no where and I had never drawn a dog before but there it was,I really didnt have to do anything. I wish it happened more because you're right its a surprise and I love surprises.

This is great, the best work usually happens with such ease and it's always the unplanned ones that are most interesting!

What a BEAUTIFUL piece of art! I'm waitng on that Magical Moment to occur again; I beleive it truly is a gift that comes around far too seldom ... for me. Your Magical Moment provided an entire party of whimsical, artful characters, whom I want to join, and share the fun they appear to be having, ;). Wishing you much blissful creating...and another Magical Moment very soon!

Wow Peggy, so cool! They totally look like they are having an important animal meeting. I wonder what they are discussing??

I have had this happen twice before, once when painting a face and once when painting an urban landscape. It was like I was completely overtaken and couldn't stop painting. Both of them got finished at about 5am after mammoth painting sessions

Hope the magic visits you again!

this rocks girlfriend!
i LOVE it.
i kept seeing something else wonderful and surprising.
lorrie, who was at AAJ with us, told me of an artist who did a workshop on this very thing...putting down paint and then drawing or painting what comes of it...it is an actual process that people teach and look at you, you figured it out all on your own.
i.m so proud.
happy day.

Love your painting. Love your openness to new possibilities. I have never experienced IT in the way you discribed as I don't paint little creatures but I do know the feeling of having an idea and then just allowing a painting to have a life of its own and being amazed a what was born at the end...Wanted to let you know that I awarded you with a Cirle of Friends awards for being one of the blogs that I LOVE. I don't often leave comments but I do love your blog and wanted to let you know. To accept the award pop by my blog- http://amcsevenycreations.blogspot.com/ then simply share 5 things you love and list 5 blogs that you love. This is a great opportunity to be a Kre8ive Ally of someone elses journey. Thanks for being an inspiration

firstly, thank you so much for loving my blue horse;) and secondly, every single time i look for the magic that i know is contained therein somewhere and if i don't see it, i put it aside til i do because i will...especially in watercolor lingers this magic but in all art, it resides and i am so glad you are finding it..this painting is fabulous!♥

What an amazing and wonderful painting. It's really beautiful.

I did a painting in Feb this year called 'The Memory of the Trees' where I had a similar experience. I felt that it came from somewhere much greater than me. I'm linking to it in case you want to have a look. http://tinniegirl.blogspot.com/2010/02/memory-of-trees.html

I've never had the same depth of experience since then, but I've had times where I'm able to let go more and let the painting happen.
